when did this show get so good?!

I've been a big fan of the Battlestar Galactica franchise ever since I was a little kid, cheesy aluminum robots and all. So it was with no small amount of apprehension that I awaited the re-imagined mini-series, and then series created by long time Star Trek alumnus Ron Moore.
The first season was pretty good, won a few awards, received acclaim by a lot of critics and fans. I watched every episode. But this year, the show seems to have gone to an entirely new level of television. Every episode is packed with drama, agonizing decisions, betrayal, and most of all character development!
As in, when the show starts, the story doesn't go from Point A to Point B (where something mildly interesting happens) and then through some miracle of technobabble, they all end up safe and unchanged at Point A again. Yes, that was a jab at Star Trek, (mostly at TNG) but we chide what we love.
I don't want to make too many references to other scifi in one post (and thereby expose myself as the true scifi geek that I am), but this show is a lot like
This show is just amazing this year. Adama's recovery and Boomer's subsequent assassination, Starbuck's capture and medical experimentation by the Cylons, the upcoming civil war spearheaded by Adama's own son.
