the casting coup of the century

Thursday, June 22, 2006

Every fan of the Superman movies remembers Marlon Brando's turn as Jor-El, Superman's Kryptonian father.

In my estimation he was memorable more for the over-acting than anything else. But that's likely what made it impossible for Brian Singer to cast anyone else in the role for the upcoming Superman Returns.

So what do you do when the actor you need for the part has been dead for over 2 years?

No, you don't dig him up, as one of my more creepy little voices wants to suggest.

You spend a ridiculous amount of money and time securing the rights to use the dead man's likeness and then painstakingly re-create the actor's movements and voice using old footage and very high tech CG animation.

Check out how Brando was brought back to life in this video.

I for one can't wait to see how it turns out when the movie hits theaters next week.

I hadn't heard about this Brando thing. . . but if this is true (and I trust you implicitly) I think this is going to be a turning point in movies.

Want Jack Nickelson in your movie? -- no, not the old Jack Nickolson, the young guy from Five Easy Pieces. With a little bit of editing, voice-mimicking, and CG, you can have a young Jack Nickelson in your movie!

The dawn of the virtual actor is upon us.

I am so pumped about this movie I can hardly see straight. I have the feeling that Bryan Singer did just about everything right. I only wish he would have gone with Jim Cazaviel; Brandon Routh looks pretty young.

You know, I hate to make statements like this, but there's pretty much no chance that this movie will suck.

I mean we're getting a do-over for the shitty Superman III & IV debacles. What Superfan isn't happy about that?

And I think Routh is going to be ok. He is young, but I think the idea behind that is we get an actor that has the longevity to play the role believably for awhile. And he's not an actor we already associate with another role.

And FYI, the official site of Superman Returns has been 'hacked' by Lex Luthor. Very funny.
