turns out Lost is based on a true story. Ours.

I just came across an article about a real scientific equation that in all likelihood was the impetus for The Best Television Show Since Star Trek, Babylon 5, Smallville, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica: Lost.
I was looking for information on The Valenzetti Equation, the supposedly fictional equation that predicts the end of the world and is the main backstory for Lost. As I was browsing through some material I came across information about The Doomsday Argument, a real life equation that was designed to auger the same thing: When mankind will become extinct.
I guess I'm not sure what shocks me more: The fact that a mathematical equation was built that actually predicts our end, or the fact that said formula's creation surprises me.
By the way, according to the equation, we only have 9120 years left, so I wouldn't wait to do that xmas shopping.
Read about The Doomsday Argument here.
And if you're into stories about Lost, here's two more that I found, and found very interesting:

Thats interesting, especially when the time frame is about 10k years from now. My evol psych prof suggested that we have about that many years left, but due to the Y chromosome beoming extinct.
Your professor might like the new movie Children of Men coming out. You just described the plot of that film.
But I don't think our inability to proceate is included in the criteria for The Doomsday Equation, likely because we'll die through more traditional means first.
