Yup, the Spaceys,
I don't watch these awards, nor do I care who wins. Normally.
And I don't know whether the recipients would really care to receive the dubious honour of a Spacey award anyways, or if they'd want to broadcast it around.
What I do know is that Star Wars III, the best SW film to come out since Empire, is up for three awards, and I sure as shit don't want to see if get beat out by some piece of crap like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or something.
So fire up your browsers and get out there and vote. Vote now, and if you're inclined to cheat, vote often. Don't do it for me. Do it for the younglings. You know, the ones that ended up on the receiving end of Vader's lightsaber?
Here's the link.
Ok. Bold statement to be sure, but honestly I have never had a better first week at any job in my life.
I spent the better part of the week getting my head crammed so full of protocols and policies on things I don't have a snowball's chance in hell of remembering, that it was pretty much spinning like a top. But it was fun to learn some new things, and it only helped illuminate just how fucking bored I was with my old job, even though I didn't really recognize it at the time.
I've met most of the people I'll be working with and to a person, everyone in the department seems pretty cool. I have never been able to say that at a new job. Of that I am sure.
Because the nature of the job is going to rely on being able to communicate quickly and clearly with other staff, it is very nice to know that everyone's backs are covered.
So there are the work reasons that this job is so cool.
But you want to know what I really love about this job?
Friday afternoon, while mentoring under one of the more senior guys, I ended up being a part of a debate on who would win in a shooting war between the Empire and the Federation. I shit you not.
And the best part? These people weren't kidding. There was a little good natured eye rolling from a couple of the guys, but even they had an opinion one way or the other.
Now don't get me wrong, nobody broke out their technical manuals or anything (thankfully I didn't mention that I own one); it was just a fun discussion among fans.
I am seriously going to love this job.

Great line from a great book. Actually if you count each part of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as a separate book, that line is in fact the title of a great book.
It is also, as it turns out, not a bad parting shot as I move from one employment opportunity to another.
I don't often post about doings in my own life anymore; I used to use this blog to give voice to some of the more important things that were going on in my life, maybe to help me understand them, maybe to help solidify my own feelings about those events. In particular I posted a great deal in the months that led up to the birth of my daughter.
Now more often I find myself making observations about things I read about, movies I see, videogames I play, etc. From my view in the cheap seats, its all good content, just little substance.
At least there's still the monthly letter to my little girl.
I think in the future I'll try to post more often about what's going on in my life, if for nothing else than to at least keep my other personalities updated on what I'm up to. (Assuming they read my blog)
To that end, I recently walked away from my cushy low paying stay-at-home job to take a real job amongst real people. While the thought of working with real live people again daunts me a little (I've been working from my home for the last two years) along with the major separation anxiety I’m likely to go through by being away from my wife and daughter for extended periods of time, I am really looking forward to the change of pace.
I fully believe that life can get a little stale when you’re not challenged enough, and as enjoyable as my life is right now, I think I could use a new challenge.

Even though the author of the spamusement website is currently going through cartoonist's block or something, some dedicated fans of his strips have been submitting content for him until he's either better or shuts down the site.
This one made me piss my pants laughing. Probably all of that Sesame Street that we watch around here these days.
Anyway, if you've never been, check out the site and browse through some of this guy's stuff. He takes subject lines from spam emails and lampoons them via cartoons. Very funny stuff.
One of the most profound discoveries of our time, that liquid water has recently been discovered flowing out of some kind of underground body on Enceladus, a moon of Saturn, is going almost unnoticed.
The news of the February 2005 data taken from the Cassini probe has just been released to the public in this month's issue of Science.
I only found out about it as I was watching 'Deal or No Deal' on CNBC on the ticker at the bottom of the screen, sandwiched between entries on a hostage situation in a school in France and the groundbreaking news that Japan is about to raise interest rates.
Can we get our priorities straight here?
We have found proof undeniable of the existence of water, the fundamental building block of life as we know it on the surface of another planet.
And since pretty much every scientist in the world agrees that water means at least the potential for life, (even my asshole grade 10 science teacher - yes I mean you Mr. Mitchell) this has effectively doubled the number of planetoids in our solar system that might contain sentient life.
And for those reading this that need their cynicism explained to them I am including Earth as one of the two planets that might contain sentient life because of the aforementioned hoopla currently being thrown over Britney Spears' second pregnancy.
This is a Big Fucking Deal, and if we weren't such a moronic, self-obsessed culture, we would be making an appropriate response about this news. Not only is there the possibility of life on any number of the recently discovered planets in other solar systems within our own galaxy, but there could be life on a planet that is practically within walking distance!
For those interested in what will be remembered as one of the most significant discoveries in human history, (if we make it far enough to have a further history) NASA has an excellent article about the discovery.
The rest of you might enjoy this. Assholes.

So without further adieu,
Dear Trinity,

Today you are now 8 months old. I woke up today to write this without being able to see you for the third day in a row. You have been visiting your grandparents with your Mom, much to my chagrin. I am on my way to see you today though, so I’ll get to hold my little girl again before the day is over.
You have had an exceptional month. You are now getting very good at crawling (still backwards, but Newton's first law says nothing about which direction the motion has to be in). Because of all this movement, we're in the process of converting the main floor of our house into a safe zone for you, complete with outlet covers, cupboard locks and baby gates. I even had to move my office upstairs to avoid any confrontations between you and all of my power cables.
You got your first tooth!

Without any indication from you at all, your first tooth appeared very unceremoniously about a week ago. Rest assured though that when we found it, there was more than enough ceremony to make up for your lapse. We called your Aunt Lisa over; we recorded some video of us making a GREAT BIG DEAL about it. And once you’re old enough to read about episodes like this, you will probably smile knowingly, realizing that this sort of embarrassing behaviour is in fact nothing new for your parents.
But it was a very cool moment.
As all moments pretty much are with you.

And yes, that is a videogame controler in your hand. For a few seconds at least, you were actually playing a game. It makes the old man proud.
Love Daddy

2006 is going to be known as 'the year every cool videogame I've been waiting for gets made'. Maybe I'll shorten that, but you get the idea.
You'd think that I'd have enough to look forward to with the new Tomb Raider: Legend, 2 new FFVII games, Final Fantasy XII, even the Lego Star Wars sequel.
But no, now there are going to be two new RPGs using superhero characters coming out this year, drawing characters from the Marvel and DC universes respectively.
Neither game is slated for release on the PSP, but then since no one is developing games for the PSP in general, that’s not much of a surprise.
There's a good article over at IGN.com about the upcoming games.
This is going to be great. Now all I have to do is not die or something this year so I can enjoy all of that superhero RPG goodness.
