working this xmas

Tuesday, December 25, 2007
So its early xmas morning, even earlier than I would normally be up on the 25th of December, and instead of getting ready to watch my little girl exhaust herself opening and playing with her xmas presents, I am instead getting ready to go to work for a 12 hour shift. The joys of shift work are now being fully realized as I get to experience firsthand that when you work somewhere that never closes, someone has to be there on xmas.

There are a few things that are going to make it worthwhile though. It is likely to be stone dead at the office today, and that will be a nice change of pace for a day shift. I will also get paid a ridiculous amount of money thanks to that strong union and their requirement that people that work stat holidays get paid twice their normal rate. And the last one isn't so much a benefit but rather a consolation; Trin is only 2 and a half, and as such isn't going to know that when she celebrates xmas on Boxing Day that she's really a day behind the rest of the world.

And as an atheist I really don't have a leg to stand on anyway. Its not like I'm missing out on the cake and ice cream at the birthday party we're throwing at home for Jesus or anything.

Yea, Atheism does kind of put a damper on the whole Xmas thing... however, the celebration around this time historically has to do with so much more... celebrate the winter solstice or something of that nature :) that or believe on my imaginary friend, they are fun ;)

Thanks for the visit and I will make sure to come back over here and read more.

Oh, you should've gone to the party. To watch that little scamp break open his pinata...

Serioustalk, I hate this whole goddamn season. Religiosity out the ass, pseudo-altruism, consumerism out the ass - what's there to like?

If this were a perfect world these raisin cakes would be marginalized and December would just be another month but alas, we're stuck with it.

Out of curiosity, how did you and Superwife approach the Santa thing? Em & I are opposed in how to handle that when it comes up. I say tell her from the get-go it's BS but she disagrees. Thoughts?

This is a tricky one. I wrote a post about this last year that you can catch here if you're interested.

I have mellowed somewhat because it turns out Trin is scared shitless of Santa and wants nothing to do with him. Yet.

But Superwife and I came to the agreement that he can be present at our house over xmas, so long as we do not talk him up during the year, we never threaten her with that better be good bullshit, the best presents always come from us, AND if she ever asks if he's real, we are going to be totally honest with her.

Our compromise has made him a marginalized figure at best, but Superwife has come around nicely to my (rational) position.

And my advice? Keep working away at this one while letting her win every other argument along the way. Its probably your best shot. ;)
